Wake-on Lan

(imported topic written by ppomeroy91)

Hello,

I followed the steps in this article: http://support.bigfix.com/bes/misc/bes-wol.html and was able to see the Wake-on-lan option from the console on the server. However, I do not have the option in the console on my pc. Is there something else I need to do for this to be available to other operators?

I also have a concern about this article: http://support.bigfix.com/bes/sites/powermanagement.html. Does runing the Wizard mean that it will go out and try to wake up all the computers in the subnets I selected? I’m not sure that’s what we want.

We just need to be able to select individual computers and wake them up when we want to.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hey Peggy,

In the current version of BES, you need to customize each Console operator’s right-click menu…

For the wake-on-lan wizard, it does let you select which computers to power-on:

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the reply. The issue doesn’t seem to be the operator but more the console. I can open the console on the main server with MY account or the besadmin account and see WoL. But if I open the console on MY computer, I’m not seeing the WoL option with either account.

Do I need to do something with my console to get the option?

Thanks,

Peggy

Peggy,

Re-run the instructions at http://support.bigfix.com/bes/misc/bes-wol.html on your computer and the right-click menu should appear.

On a similar wol question, I have the wake on lan function setup correctly (at least I believe it is correctly setup) for my console station that I do my BES stuff from. By that I mean that I can right-click and select wake on lan. However, I’m not certain what behavior I should be seeing when I do that. What happens for me is that when I do this on a computer, I will see a quick command window open and close, and that is it. Is this the expected output of doing the right-click Wake-On LAN command on a computer?

Thanks,

Hi Mike,

Yes… for the custom right-click menu, that is what you will see…

As a note, in the next versions of BigFix, we have incorporated more advanced wake-on-lan functionality that is integrated into the right-click menu (for users with power management)… the new wake-on-lan automatically routes the wake-on-lan through the relays and doesn’t require an action (so it is faster and more efficient).

Hey Ben,

One last question I have with Wake-On LAN, and I’m not sure if this is something someone can help with our not. We are using a system called Persystent Enterprise for doing our images of the computers that we install, and that is accomplished using PXE Booting. When I send a Wake-On LAN request to a computer, more often then not the computer’s alternate boot up process in the BIOS tells the computer to boot from the LAN first, which means that in some cases it pulls up special administrative menus for PE. Do you or any of the other users know of a means by which I can remotely change the BIOS settings on the computers so that we can change that boot order? All of our desktop computers are Lenovo, and our laptops are a mix of Gateway and Lenovo.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Mike Ellis

Hi Mike,

Nope… I don’t know of any way to change the BIOS settings on those computers… but if you contact your manufacturer and they give you a tool to do it, you can deploy it in BigFix and run it on the computers…

That’s what I thought. Thanks for getting back to me, Ben!

Ben - is this functionality in the version that is out now? We are on 7.1.1.315 which I believe is the current version. The reason I ask is that we have been testing WOL with some older Compaq EVO’s. They have WOL, and when we use the right-click WOL the pc wakes up, but using the wizard doesn’t wake it up. Also, are you stating above that the WOL right-click function will use agents and cross subnets?

Hi Jamie,

Yes. This feature is out in 7.1 and appears to be working quite well according to the feedback we get. This should give you the info you need:
