Urgent help needed - installing BES 7.2.1 on Windows server 2008

(imported topic written by Shlomi91)

Hi,

Really need your help here guys…

I am trying to migrate my server to a new hardware machine.

my current machine is a 2xdual xeon with 2 GB RAM and Windows 2003 32 bit, my new machine is 2xQuad with 8 GB RAM and Windows server 2008 64 bit.

I am using a remote SQL 2005 DB.

ny current machine is on domain x.y.z (as is my SQL server), and i am a domain admin in x domain.

my new machine is on domain y.z, and i have admin rights on it.

installing goes well (using a remote DB and a masthead i exported from my old server), until the point i need to enter the SQL credentials. i choose “NT Authentication”, and i am then requested to enter the NT user which will be used to start the FillDB, GatherDB and Webreports services. i am then trying to browse for the NT user i used in my previous server, but then i am getting an error that says “the list is empty”. attempting to manually entering the user in the format DOMAIN\USER also gives no positive results.

i then went back and chose “SQL Authentication”, and provided a SQL user with SA prievlages. i am able to complete the installation, but the FillDB, GatherDB and Webreports services are using a Local System account. once i change it to my NT user, i am able to start the BES GatherDB service, but FillDB and Webreports fail to start, with error message “1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion”.

since i stopped the services and changed the name / IP of my old server, and my new server is still not up, i am probably stacking up heaps of backlogs…

any help will be appreciated,

Thanks,

Shlomi

Hi Shlomi,

Talking with our support team probably will be best here…

Throwing out a guess: perhaps your NT Authenticated account doesn’t have the appropriate access to the local BigFix system and so when you try to start the services, it can’t get permission to do what it needs. Can you check to see if the NT user is a local admin and then try to use the user for FillDB/GatherDB? You also should doublecheck that this NT user has the appropriate access to read/write from the BFEnterprise database.

As usual, Ben, you were right on the money…

since the service account i used in domain x is a domain admin in x, but NOT a domain admin in domain y, i had to manually add it to the local server’s admin group… that did the trick.

thanks,

Shlomi
