Relay taking large amount of disk space (bfsites)

(imported topic written by khouck)

I have about 30 relays (out of +1200) that have 15GB worth of data in D:\Program Files\BigFix Enterprise\BES Relay\wwwroot\bfmirror\bfsites. The other relays have 1GB or less. My questions are 1) Why do these have so much more than the others? and 2) How do I fix this? This is causing these boxes to run out of space on D:

15GB!

Wow… I would expect that all relays would have roughlt the same data… Can you figure out where the extra space is at by comparing a “good” relay with a problematic relay? You can work with our support team for this…

If the space is in some big files, we can probably delete them (but we want to know what they are)… if the space is in old files/folders, we probably want to see why they were there…

I compared two PC’s:

PC 1–bfsites folder = 404M --> has 76 subfolders that start with manymirror_#…

PC 2–bfsites folder = 13.9G --> has 1100 subfolders that start with manymirror_#…

As far as the dates of the manymirror folders, both PC’s have their first one dated 10/11/2007 and the last one dated 2/8/2007.

The counts for the other sub-folders (the ones that start with enterprisemirror and ManyDirLists) are practically the same number.

So, it appears my problem is with the shear number of manymirror* folders (with their files). Any ideas on why the discrepancy and how to get these fixed? If necessary, I can manually delete them, but I don’t know which ones (but I would definitely perfer a fix).

Thanks

Hi khouck,

I am not sure why this is happening… I suppose maybe the relay cleanup routine is not working for some reason (maybe a bug, maybe some process like AV has those files locked, or many other reasons), but I don’t think we can help unless we look through everything with you. It would be best to contact support.

I’ve run into this also on the odd relay. I uninstalled the relay and re-installed and it seems to have solved the problem. Let me know what you come up with as the root cause as I may have more relays out there with the same issue.

I have opened a call with BigFix and worked with them on it. At this point, I have sent them some files and they are supposed to have the developers look at it. Basically, though, they don’t know why it is doing this (yet). Once I have more, I’ll post it.

I am noticing this at a couple of our relays as well. I am using the BESRemoval tool and deleting all of the BES directories. I have noticed ove 2000 manymirror* files and I don’t know why.

Hi khouck,

ill double your 15 GB and raise you 10 GB :slight_smile:

i had the same issue on one of my remote servers - BESRelay folders exploded drive C.

from what i could understand from examining the removal tool log files, the registry keys where BESRelay is registered were corrupt (or otherwise unreadable), so i am guessing cleanup operations failed because they couldnt determine the BESRelay folder location.

see the log files for more details…
