Quick question on computer groups

(imported topic written by SystemAdmin)

hey all, what is the quickest way to dump a list of 5600 machine’s into a computer group. They are pretty spread out so there is no other real way to deploy to them, that I can think of. i need to send a restart job out to them at 2 am tonight and was thinking I could just drop them into a computer group and target that with my restart fixlet but I cannot seem to figure out a way to simply “drop” the list into a new group.

Any ideaas??

thanks as always,

Hey Paul,

How I like to do this is to take a blank action and put your list in the targeting for the action. Once the action is created, the Computers tab of the action will list them all out and you can right-click and add them to a manual group. Once they are in the manual group you can delete the blank action.

If you are only taking this restart action on these computers though its not worth creating the group. You want to avoid creating actions with large lists of computers and doing the operation described here creates 2 actions with the list in it (one where you put them into a blank action and one when you put them into a manual group). If would be better just to put the list into your restart action. If you are going to use the group a lot though it would be a big saving since you only create the 2 actions with a long computer list when you create the group and further actions using the group are efficient.
