Looking to perform a similar thing except we need more flexibility on the caching times. It doesn’t sound like what has been implemented will be sufficient.
Here is what we are looking to do:
pre-cache files during the evening when the branches are closed. We want to restrict the download to certain times.
install the file during the day when machines are turned on. Possibly during restricted times as well.
I totally agree! I’m in the same boat and would like to be able to schedule the download to start in the evening when there is low network utilization so that the updates/installs are cached overnight and available in the morning. It would be nice if this wasn’t tied to the fixlet start/signing time. It would be great if there was a “start client download at: Date, Time” setting or “start client download between the hours of x and y”.
We had a huge debate on this topic… the issue was that it was very confusing to include multiple scheduling options in the Take Action Dialog (which is rapidly run out of screen space to add more options). Our initial conclusion was that it was impractical to implement a full scheduling scheme for the downloads and the actions in the same dialog. So we had a choice to either not offer a pre-cache in the same dialog OR to allow a pre-cache without scheduling options. We chose the latter…
If you want to schedule a download, your options are:
Use throttling to control download times independent of actions.
Schedule the download in an independent action (perhaps by using the pre-cache wizard).
Send out the action with the pre-cache option at the time you want the download to begin (e.g., after the branches are closed).
I would still really like to see at schedule, or at least a start time for the “start client download”. However it sounds like that isn’t going to happen so I’d settle for an option to pre-cache a baseline!! As it is now if I create a baseline with a lot of manually selected MS fixlets in it I then have to go into the File Pre-Cache Wizard and again manually select all the same patches to be pushed out to my BES relays overnight. It would be great if you could simply tell the File Pre-Cache Wizard to create a pre-cache task for all of the fixlets that are listed in a certain baseline!
The form being crowded can be edited as my mockup attachment. The inner workings that really is up to you but that is basically the feature we were all looking for.
