Offering installs to server 2003

(imported topic written by eandreasen91)

I’m trying to use the offering function to install software on our 2003 servers. In the console I’m getting a status of Pending Offer Acceptance, when I goto the server there is no offering. I’m running BF 7.1.1.315, I’ve used the offering several time with the XP workstation and have not had this problem. Is there a way to get this offering to be presented on the server?

how are you logged into the server? Locally or Remote Console.

Are the multiple users logged in?

To be 100% sure, log in locally and try. The offer has to be given to “someone” and typically it’s the logged in user. There are certain restrictions with presenting these kinds of things to “remote” user.s

It does present when I log in locally, is there a way around the restriction with the remote users. Most of our servers are remote and we are trying to do offerings to the servers.

If it doesn’t present the offering in the systray is there a command that can be ran to prsent the offering to the person signed in?

Hi eandreasen,

The offer is supposed to appear to any logged on user unless you changed your BES Client UI settings so that it only runs as the local user… Have you made any changes to the BESClientUI settings?

No setting changes have been made that I’m aware of. There have been two other people set the software up orginally and I’m not sure if they changed anything. It was mentioned that there were certian restrictions with presenting to “remote users”. Is that the case and how can we get the offerening presented to a remote user?

Check the Task:

“BES Client Setting: BESClientUI Enable Mode” and also look at the value of the setting “_BESClient_ActionManager_UIEnableMode” when clicking on the agent and looking at its details to see if the value had been changed.

I have check the task and the “BES Client Setting: BESClientUI Enable Mode” and “_BESClient_ActionManager_UIEnableMode” values have not been changed. Is there a process that can be ran after the we remote into the server that will present us with offereing?

You can try to run the TriggerClientUI.exe in the BES Client folder to launch the ClientUI as a troubleshooting step to see if the offers are there…

I’ve found two more things out. 1. I don’t get the offering on the 64 bit install but I do on a 32 bit install of server2003. 2. if you use the console switch for RDP you will see the offerings on both platforms.

When running the offering is there a way to get a more descriptive title to pop up. I’m trying to push a baseline with multiple tasks. each task title is the title of the offering, is there a way to have the title of each task show up instead of the title of the offering?

Hey eandreason,

The new BigFix 7.2.4 agent has several BESClientUI fixes including some work done to make it work better on x64 systems.

For the title of the offer, I think you need to explicitly set it in the Take Action Dialog.

thanks for the information on the upgrade. we will look into it.

I’m going to change systems now. When I was testing the offering on the WinXP (running SP2 at this point) system all of my test systems received the offering sometimes after a reboot but they did receive it.

I have now ran into a few systems that we don’t receive the offering until we log in as the local administrator. Not just a domain account with administrator rights on the PC.

Any ideas?

It could be a permissions issue on the BESClientUI.exe file… There are fixes for permissions in 7.2.4 as well:
