New BES Server and Console hardware recommendations are available!

(imported topic written by BenKus)

We have recently revised our product hardware requirements for several reasons including:

  • Customers continue to use BES more aggressively and continue using more BES functionality.
  • New hardware configurations are available (at relatively cheap prices).
  • We have a lot more customers of all sizes that give us a lot more experience about optimal configurations.
  • These changes will help support future versions of the product.

Overall, these requirements are not drastically from the previous recommendations, but there are a couple of areas we focused on:

  • The hard drive configurations and disk IO speeds are key to good BES performance.
  • Multiple RAID controllers that support RAID 10 with 50/50 read/write cache give much better performance at high scale.
  • Increased the RAM requirements of the BES Server to increase SQL Server performance and avoid disk thrashing.
  • Increased the BES Console disk space requirements to account for BES Console using more disk space for cache in future versions.

In general, the next versions of BES are expected to give better performance on the same systems and the previous hardware requirements should continue to work going forward (with the note that BES Console disk usage will increase in future versions). However, if you are having performance issues, please review the new requirements and if they are signficantly different from your current hardware, please consider upgrading.

We beefed up our console workstations a while back and there was a considerable performance increase in combination with the latest console…

My next move will be a beefier server with a 50/50 read/write raid controller… Performance is good with 20000+ clients but I’m sure it will be better with the new specs…
