Mobile Device Statistics

(imported topic written by SystemAdmin)

Does IBM have any statistics on mobile devices in the industry they can provide to me to put into a whitepaper? I am currently trying to get a R&D effort approved for MDM and any information that can be provided to me to “sell” TEM MDM would be great, but I definitely need the stats.

Thanks

Also…

Does anyone have the

Actual

breakdown of what capabilities are available for each OS? I’m talking about what is noted in the MDM Overview found here:

https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home?lang=en#/wiki/Tivoli%20Endpoint%20Manager/page/Mobile%20Devices%20Overview

Mobile Device Management functionality*

Policy & Security Management – Manage password policies, device encryption, jailbreak and root detection

Management Actions – Selective wipe, full wipe, deny email access, remote lock

Application Management – Application inventory, recommended app deployment, app categorization

Enterprise Access Management – Manage access to enterprise resources including email, VPN, and wifi

Location Services – Optionally track device locations for corporate devices

*Not all functionality available on all platforms

Hi Andrew,

Some more info for you:

  • On all devices and versions, you can set password policies and wipe the device (including email-based management).
  • iOS 4+ allows jailbreak detection, selective wipe, remote lock, password reset, app inventory, app recommendation/deployment, encryption, security restrictions, enterprise access management (email/vpn/wifi)
  • iOS 5+ also allows the new “managed app” capability and extended iOS restrictions (Siri, iCloud, etc.)
  • Android 2.2+ allows root detection, remote lock, password reset, app inventory, app recommendation/deployment, location services
  • Android 3.0+ allows for more extensive password controls
  • Android 4.0+ allows for encryption, some security restrictions, and wifi management
  • Traveler-managed devices also allow for deny email access and selective wipe
  • Exchange-managed devices also allow for deny email access

I don’t think you should consider this list comprehensive or authoritative (I may have forgotten some features)…

If you look in the product, it will tell you which devices can use each function…

Ben,

I do not have the MDM product yet…therefore cannot look in the product for more info. I need to have a R&D effort approved before I can get the licenses for MDM. That is why I am trying to collect data to put together and present it.

Also, what about the Windows Mobile Devices? You didn’t list that OS.

Windows Mobile 5.x and 6.x have a native agent and have lots of functionality (I will need to find the full list)…

Windows Phone 7 can’t have an agent in the traditional sense and so it must use Exchange-based management.
