Microsoft extended support for Windows XP Service Pack 1

(imported topic written by Rolf.Wilhelm91)

As you all know, Microsoft Support for Windows XP SP1 will end in October 2006, after this no security patches will be published by Microsoft any more in public.

Of course it is possible to get (payed) extended support from Microsoft: At our company, we still get some patches even vor NT4. These patches are not downloadable from a free available web site, but are available for us. The same will happen for the support for XP with SP1. And of course I think we will not be the only Microsoft customer with such an agreement.

We do not have any NT4 systems connected to our BigFix infrastructure, but we have a lot of XP/SP1 systems which we cannot remove or update in the next month with SP2.

Because it is possible to manually “precache” files on the BigFix Server, we have possibilities:

  • Everyone with such an agreement is authoring the Fixlets for XP/SP1 on its own
  • We start sharing the resulting Fixlets at some place, maybe here
  • BigFix continues to support us by deploying Fixlets for these patches, but we have to add the needed files on our own to the Cache.

the last one seems to be identical as it is currently done with RedHat Enterprise Linux, for which a special Precache/Downloader-Tool exists to assist the precache-procedure.

Rolf.
