McAfee 5400 engine

(imported topic written by SystemAdmin)

FYI…

McAfee will be forcing the release of their 5400 engine for McAfee VirusScan on 11/18/09. The download has been available since 8/26/09. I don’t think there’s a fixlet to update this one yet.

Hey Paul,

I will forward to the Fixlet team and see what they think…

Thanks,

Hey Paul,

The Fixlet team told me that the superdat will include the 5400 engine at the end of this month… which should allow the engine update through the superdat updates.

Does that work for you?

Hi Ben,

That really doesn’t help trying to prepare for the mass deployment on 11/18/09. We use McAfee ePO to manage the McAfee settings. On 11/18/09, our ePO server will automatically receive the 5400 engine, which (unless I stop engine updates) will mass update every PC with the 5400 engine all at once. Even a PC that has McAfee VirusScan that downloads from the Internet - will also automatically get teh 5400 engine on the 18th.

I was trying to deploy it a little slower without having to modify my ePO policies. For now, I manually uploaded the 5400 engine EXE to our BES server and created a modified copy of the Outdated McAfee engine fixlet to push it out. By the 18th, I should have about 80% of the company already done. So it won’t be such a mass update for the engine.

One interresting note… I have the fixlet launching 5400eng.exe and waiting for it. Once complete, it initially reports back that it failed. However, it looks like VirusScan is still “doing its thing” and takes a few minutes. The fixlet evenually changes from failed to fixed.
