Manual upgrade 9.0 -> 9.1.x w. remote SQL Server

While doing a manual upgrade from 9.0 to 9.1.x we ran into issues with the server installer: We had previously confirmed everything was working with a SQL server running mixed mode on a remote machine, using a sql server user and password on the 9.0 setup. So we were pretty frustrated and surprised when the installer kept saying the password for the user did not give access to update the database. After snooping what registry-keys were looked upon before failing, it turned out the installer was looking at the key called HKLM\Software\BigFix\Enterprise Server\UseRemoteDB=0 . After changing this to 1, the installer picked up the ‘normal’ DB connection settings as described in the article below and went through.
