Major Reboot Issues with MS12-039: Vulnerabilities in Lync

(imported topic written by SystemAdmin)

Warning!

We have found out that Windows 7 machines that apply this patch (MS12-039: Vulnerabilities in Lync Could Allow Remote Code Execution - Communicator 2007 R2) will reboot without any warning message to the user.

This message appears in the Event Log:

The process msiexec.exe has initiated the restart of computer XXXXXXXXX on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found

Reason Code: 0x80030002

Shutdown Type: restart

Comment: The Windows Installer initiated a system restart to complete or continue the configuration of ‘Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2’.

We have setup a managed property to track this error message and with our uptime property we have determined that over 1000 Windows 7 machines have rebooted! We have contacted our Microsoft rep and informed them. It appears that the switches in the fixlet are correct, so it looks like it is a patch issue, not a BigFix one. We have applied the patch to over 5000 machines and at this time the auto reboots are only occurring on Windows 7 and not on XP.

Thanks,

Scott

Update…it appears that it is a Fixlet issue not a patch issue. There were some switches left off the .msp command line to stop Windows 7 machines from rebooting. They will be updating soon.

This is the incorrect command line:

waithidden msiexec.exe /p __Download\Communicator.msp /qn

Make sure not to send it to Windows 7 machines until its updated.

Thanks,

Scott
