Issue with March 2018 Microsoft Patches

Microsoft released two new patches that fix the NIC and BSOD issues (KB4099950 and KB4099467 respectively).

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4099467/stop-error-0xab-when-you-log-off-a-windows-7-sp1-or-windows-server-200

The notes for KB4088875 and KB4088878 state that you should install KB4099950 before installing either of those, and then install KB4100480 after. KB4100480 fixes a “bug” introduced by the January/February Meltdown/Spectre patches.

I haven’t seen the latest fixes (KB4099950 and KB4099467) show up in BigFix yet, but I have installed KB4100480. So far, no new issues with that one - you really do need to QA the MS patches these days. Hopefully, KB4099950 and KB4099467 will be released by IBM soon, and we can test them in our environment.

i just have a question regarding kb4099950 as im getting tired of always needing to restarting everything for every update, does this make you restart your computer? thanks!

I too am interested in the bigfix availability of KB4099950.

@jsast The KB4099950 update contains a file “PCIClearStaleCache.exe” which appears to do the same thing as the VBScript you posted.

I’m highly interested in this patch being released as well. (KB4099950 and KB4099467)

What is the ETA for KB4099950?

Thanks,
Scott

@jgstew Sorry for pinging you, if you’re the wrong person to ask, but any chance you know what’s going on with KB4099950 and KB4099467 being released through BigFix? These two KB fix issues caused by KB4088875 and KB4088878.

From Microsoft:

KB4099950
This update addresses issues introduced in KB4088875 and KB4088878 for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 where a new Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) with default settings may replace the previously existing NIC, causing network issues. Also addressed, is an issue where static IP address setting are lost after applying the update. These symptoms may be seen on physical computers and virtual computers running VMWare.

KB4099467
After you install Monthly Rollup KB 4088875 or Security-only update KB 4088878, you receive a Stop error 0xAB error message that resembles the following when you log off the computer:
SESSION_HAS_VALID_POOL_ON_EXIT (ab)

If you don’t any any info, do you know who may? Thanks.

Are these off cycle patch fixes released by MS? I think these are in progress. I’ll check and ask.

Putting @jgstew in a forum post is always a good idea. I might not be the right person, but I probably know who is.

Work on content for KB4099950 is in progress but I don’t have an ETA for this one.

Content for KB4099467 should be ready soon. If I had to guess, I’d give it a day or so.

You seem keen for someone to answer this.

A quick look at the fixlet shows it ends with

action requires restart "...."

This isn’t really a Bigfix question though, Bigfix is just the delivery mechanism for the payload.

Also, you need to apply this before the March OS update for Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2, so put them both into the same baseline and restart once at the end.

Hi,

I think this is the real doubt/question : is it possible to put the KB4099950 and March and April patches in the same baseline/aciont and so, with an unique restart ? Or you have to install the KB alone, restart the server and then install the monthly rollup ?

This has nothing to do with Bigfix.

Ask yourself what would happen with a stand-alone machine running automatic updates?

Would it apply one patch, restart, apply the next patch, restart, … or does it apply all the patches it identifies as needed then do a single restart at the end?
