HP Image Assistant works manually but BigFix deployment fails with exit code 1603

Hello everyone,

I faced some trouble installing HP Image Assistant via BigFix deployment, and I hope that somebody will be able to help me with it.

I support a few HP models, such as EliteBooks and ProBooks. I obtained the latest version of HP Image Assistant from HP directly through the package:

https://ftp.ext.hp.com/pub/caps-softpaq/cmit/HPIA.html

The installation is performed successfully in case of manual execution of the application by a local admin. The software starts properly, performs the analysis, and downloads the corresponding SoftPaqs without issues.

When the same installation is packed within BigFix deployment, the application returns exit code 1603 on some computers, while on other ones, the installation is completed, but the analysis part never starts. Besides, it seems that the installation folder is correctly created in C:\SWSetup; however, HPImageAssistant.exe never starts or just closes right after being executed. No drivers are updated.

The following actions were tried in order to solve the problem:

Downloading the latest package of HPIA from the official site.
Creation of a new BigFix package from the freshly downloaded file.
Checking the SHA256 checksum after download.
Testing the installation within the SYSTEM and admin execution contexts.
Disabling antivirus while deploying.
Checking that the machines had an internet connection.
Checking the logs of HPIA for any hints about the error.
Redownloading the installer from a different source since I assumed that my initial download might have been corrupted

Redownloaded package installs the same version and behaves the same way, therefore I assume that the installer file itself is not corrupted.

Has anybody succeeded in installing HPIA via BigFix deployment? Is there any special set of command-line arguments, working directory, execution context, or relevance rules necessary for correct deployment?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi @adyuth Welcome!

Could you share the Action Script you're using to deploy HPIA?

Since HPIA works when run manually, the issue is likely related to how it's being invoked by BigFix rather than HPIA itself. Reviewing the Action Script should help identify whether the problem is with the execution context, command line parameters, working directory, or another deployment related issue.

Also, exit code 1603 is a generic Windows Installer error indicating that "a fatal error occurred during installation." With HP Image Assistant (HPIA), this can occur for several reasons, including an active process blocking the installation, insufficient administrative privileges, a pending system reboot, or other environmental conditions. The Action Script and any installation logs should help narrow down the exact cause.
