Help:About patch management

(imported topic written by soymm91)

Dear admin,

I created a multiple action group and pushed 15 critical windows patches to a target server.

I notice the patches download is very slowly and they are installed one by one automatically.

I think it’s cost a lot of time, maybe 24 hours for installation.

Can you introduce me the fuction of patch update? When I execute a action to push a patch, would the package be download to BES client directly? Which directory is the installation package restored? What is the BES Tier 2 relay’s responsibility? Does the BES Tier 2 relay get patches first and then push to the client?

Thank you!

Hi soymm,

That sounds like a very long time just to send a few patches… Is your bandwidth very slow between your agent and the relay?

Here is the BigFix Admin guide that can help answer your many questions:

I There is no reference in Admin guide. Pls kindly help me on this. Thank you!

Soymm,

Yes. If the agent is restarted after it has run the action, it will delete the patch files from the system to save space.

Did you need the source files for some reason?

Ben,

Yes. We want to find a method to download the patches first without installing them. Because, we have a window(about 2 days) to install the patches and reboot the production system. If we let the BES client to download patches and install them one by one, it will cost a lot of time as the result of our bandwidth.

Is there any way to perform this?

Hi soymm,

Some discussion on this topic is here:

Would it be possible to put a BigFix Relay “closer” to the computer so that they will have faster bandwidth to download the files (which will be automatically cached on the relays). This would be the easiest and most common way to address this issue.

And what sort of bandwidth speeds are you talking about? I am shocked that it takes so long for you to transfer the files…
