I’ve been using BigFix for a couple years now, and with the release of v8, I am suprised that there still isn’t a good way to report on the success or failure of a patching cycle through an automated email. This is an enterprise tool but I would think that this ability would be a given.
It would be great if you could choose if you want to send off an email if the action failed or succeed.
Agreed. I do think there is some hinky way of doing it through the web console, but nothing like an easy check box or some type of built in alerting feature.
Can you (and anyone else interested) go into a bit more depth regarding what type of alerting you’re looking for? Is it enough to just email you results when the action expires, or is there a need for emails triggered by specific changes in an action’s status? If the latter, what are the types of conditions under which you want to be emailed and why?
my operators are looking for alerting when an action is both a success and a failure. Maybe one email per action, with a list of all the clients of that action, their status, etc.
The one alert per action makes sense (though I suppose it might get more difficult for baselines), but I’m curious what would trigger the alert. Would each computer reporting in success/failure for a given action trigger a new email sent with a summary of the status of the action at the moment? If lots of computers were targeted, that could result in a lot of emails.
A problem here is categorizing an action as a “success” or “failure”. Is a success when 100% are complete? Is it a failure if it fails to complete on any given computer? Just trying to dig in a bit more.
Also, there is an open question of when to send the email… wait for every computer to report? wait a specific time period? Do we need to resend it periodically?
Good question ben. I say, provide the option when the operator creates the action. The operator can check if they want it to occur at a certain date and time, when the percentage of completion reaches xx%, or at certain intervals of time.
I agree that there should be an easy alerting mechanism that is configurable at the time of taking action. Session relevance programming in web reports should not be needed to get a basic e-mail alert. I like cstoneba’s options. I would also add options to only notify upon failure or notify if action runs longer than x amount of time (configurable).
Taking that a step further, an e-mail or reporting tab in the “action settings” dialog of each task/fixlet allowing those options to be pre-defined by the author would be excellent for those of us who create a lot of custom content.
It would be great if the same options were available when creating/editing analyses. I know it can be coded in web reports, but it would be so much easier to set it when creating/editing analyses.
