BigFix Application Migration from Virtual machine to Physical Machine

Hi All,

We have Root and DSA Server both installed on Virtual machine and as per Client requirement we are going to migrate IBM BigFix Application from Primary Virtual server to Physical Server and DSA Server will be still on Virtual machine

As I am performing Migration for the first time for that reason I am going to test the migration first in QA Server and if it is successful. I will perform the actual migration in Production environment.

For the QA migration I have got two QA virtual servers and one QA Physical Server.
So, My question is - will Evaluation version of IBM BigFix Application support migration ?

Any help will be highly appreciated

it is recommended to have Bigfix root server and DSA server both on same hardware…means physical-physical or virtual virtual.

Yes we can perform the migration testing on evaluation version.

Hi All,

IS Replication possible between Root Server and DSA Servers through Evaluation version of IBM BigFix ??

Thanks in Advance!!

Even I want to know, Does evaluation supports DSA(Replicated DB)?
@BigFixNinja any thoughts please?

Yes, that functionality should work with the evaluation version as well. The eval version is most likely being run on a SQL Express database. The secondary server should also be running a SQL Express database as well. If you find that it does not work, please post back.

That’s right, But while I’m installing BigFix Eval. version it does not prompt me to choose the Replication database. That’s only available for Production version. Can you please check it once from your side and post the results?

Yes, will check on my end for confirmation

Ok, there is not much information as to what features are part of or not part of the evaluation version when you go to the evaluation version download page here:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/downloads/tiv/endpoint/

Before IBM acquired BigFix, we did have a note on this old page here:
http://support.bigfix.com/bes/install/serverreqeval.html

… that said something to the effect of:

Note: These requirements are for the standard evaluation version and the production version of BES can support many other advanced deployment options such as air-gap installations, different port numbers, etc.”

I am assuming DSA replication is one of those features not included.

There is also nothing stated in our current documentation regarding this as well: http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSQL82_9.5.0/com.ibm.bigfix.doc/Platform/Installation/c_types_of_installation_evaluation.html

I’ll submit a request to have documentation updated in this area.

It is probably best to install the full featured version with a restricted license (gotten from Sales) than it is to install the 30/30 evaluation install. The 30/30 install needs to be completely removed and the full featured version completely installed on a new license anyway.

While performing IEM installation on DSA Server I am not able to find root Server database name

Please advice!!

@BigFixNinja Thank you, that answers my queries. But is it possible for me to get the full featured version from sales or is it restricted?

Full featured can be downloaded from here:
http://support.bigfix.com/bes/release/

You’ll just need to get the license to install it from sales.

Maybe turn on SQL Server browser service on the SQL machine so that its name is broadcast on the network and findable?

Might be possible that port 52311 and 1433 are blocked due to which root server is visible.
