Hi, we have a license for 550 seats, of which 384 are in use. However, some servers are showing up in grace mode. When I check the registry entry HKLM/Software/BigFix/EnterpriseClient/GlobalOptions/LicenseId, it says 552 are in use. This is a new rebuild, of which maybe 20 servers have been reinstalled, taking the number of entries up to maybe 400 in the database. What could be causing this, and how do I correct it?
The systems will re-claim unused licenses in 24 hours so if you re-imaged a bunch of systems, you can wait a day and BigFix should figure out that the old computers are gone and the new ones took their place…
If you still have the issue, you might contact support and they can check to make sure you don’t have a rogue client that is confusing itself into taking up more than 1 license…
the issue. During the rebuild, many machines were added to the system without reinstalling the client (via changing a couple of registry entries). The “cool scripting master” analyst who did it thought it would “save time”.
So how does one “reset” the computer so that it thinks it has only one seat? And, out of curiosity, why would you ever want a computer to think it has more than one seat? Inquiring minds want to know
The server keeps track of the licenses so if a computer is rebuilt three times, it looks to the server like 3 new computers were installed… so if you have a lot of rebuilds it temporarily uses extra licenses, but the system reclaims them if the agents stop reporting so it should fix itself…
In the past, we had some very rare bugs where a single agent would go haywire and keep asking for new licenses and then resetting itself… I think we traced it back to a bad motherboard or something like that… but if something like that happened, it would be pretty easy to spot and fix by our support team and we have only seen something like that a few times…
Hmmm… that didn’t give me quite what I was looking for. When I collect that property, it looks like a unique index value. I expected to see many “1” or “2” results, but I see unique incremental numbers up to just over the total of licenses.
