Has anyone created a custom dashboard that will keep a simple Asset Tracking database? We tried using DSS SAM as a hardware inventory but when systems are reimaged and redeployed the information get’s reset. Right now I am planning on creating a web form and creating a separate database for simple tracking ie computer name, model, service tag, purchase date, PO#, warranty, etc. If Big fix has something like this it would be great.

we are thinking of doing something similar but with extracts from bigfix for the data.

coolitman, we agree with you that Asset Tracking should be part of DSS SAM. Right now it is just a point in time snapshot. It needs to be historical and should be expanded to Hardware Aset Management (HAM). With the pending life sucking IBM is most likely to do, I doubt we’ll see that (Tivoli already has that functionality).

The typical answer here is that you can either:

  1. Try to store this info on the computer itself and retrieve it as a property…

OR

  1. Store this info in a computer comment…

OR

  1. Export the data to a custom database or to a commercial database and include the info there…

IBM guys were telling us about their ITAM solution that they have (Tivoli CCMDB I think it was called) so that can work if you had that solution… We have worked with other customers to export their data to Peregrine or Remedy as well.
